Viral Memes That Have Taken Over the Internet

Viral Content on Internet

Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the last few years, you will have heard of memes. For most people, the norm is to be tagged in a meme at least once a day. No longer do we message our friends asking how they are. Instead, we tag them in a meme relevant to our friendship. Here are the viral memes that took over the internet in 2016, according to Seventeen.

Confused Mr. Krabs

SpongeBob has been the brunt of many memes in 2016. We’ve all had that feeling when we are doing something completely normal and come to a sudden realization that something isn’t quite right. This is what the Mr. Krabs meme is all about, with one Twitter user getting over 6,000 retweets posting “When you just wake up from a nap and your parents already yelling at you”. Although the exact source is unknown, the original image is from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode “Patty Hype”, where Mr. Krabs is being bombarded by angry Bikini Bottom residents.

Joe Biden And Obama

Obama’s best friend and America’s favorite bromance, Joe Biden the ex-Vice President of the United States certainly had a good relationship with his boss. Joe and Obama’s memes were taking over the internet in 2016, especially once Trump was elected, mostly at his expense. With so many meme-worthy images of the two of them together, the Obama-Biden bromance is definitely one of the best America has ever seen. As the nostalgia for Obama continues, so will the memes of Joe and Obama planning against Trump.

Evil Kermit

This is one of the most popular memes to date, with the most memes retweeted in 2016 at its peak. Evil Kermit is an image of Kermit, opposite his evil doppelganger, as seen on the movie Muppets Most Wanted. Evil Kermit represents our darkest thoughts and feelings, that we wouldn’t normally admit to. With so many relatable memes of our laziest and harshest thoughts coming to light, we have started to realize we aren’t the only ones who have these dark urges, making the meme as popular as it is today.

A More Iconic Trio

When someone posted the question “Name A More Iconic Trio… I’ll Wait” with a picture of the Kardashian sisters, the internet didn’t lack in its responses. Apparently, there are many more iconic trios than three of the Kardashian-Jenner siblings including The American Idol judges, the three Friends girls and Ed, Edd, and Eddy. If you have a better trio in mind, or perhaps you want to have a go at creating your own meme, the Rage Maker is a great tool using the original derp faces that we all know and love.

There will always be a new meme taking the internet by storm and there are many more iconic memes from 2016 that are not mentioned above. Make your own memes for that perfect inside joke with your friends, or maybe even for your five minutes of fame on the internet.
